Objectives

OBJECTIVES

We aim to

  • Engage in a wide range of educational activities
  • Constantly improve molecular genetic methods for diagnosis and treatment of cancer
  • Launch a development subprogram with regard to Nuclear Medicine
  • Coordinate the needs of medical centers with those of medical device manufacturers
  • Establish the National Oncology Biobank
  • Set up a center for preclinical studies and biomedical cell products

ACTIVITIES

The FSBI NMRRC (The Federal State Budgetary Institution National Medical Research Radiological Center) of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation integrates three affiliated branches. The Center focuses on the development of fundamental and applied scientific potential, as well as the application of brand new achievements of science and technology in the diagnosis and treatment of oncological diseases.

The FSBI NMRRC comprises three Russia’s leading institutions, with their most research and development based on the principles of enhancement of treatment efficiency, conservation and improvement of human life quality:

  • P. Hertsen Moscow Oncology Research Center, branch of the FSBI NMRRC of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation,

one of the oldest applied research centers in Europe and the first Russian oncological institution, which laid the basis for domestic cancer science and medical service for oncological patients.

  • A. Tsyb Medical Radiological Research Center, branch of the FSBI NMRRC of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, Russia’s major center for the development and application of high-tech radiological methods to diagnose and treat patients with cancer and non-cancer diseases.

  • N. Lopatkin Research Institute of Urology and Interventional Radiology, branch of the FSBI NMRRC of the Ministry of Health of the Russian Federation, an efficiently run innovative medical center engaged in the profound study of reproductive system pathology and in practical activities in this field.

The status of the national center has significantly expanded patients’ possibilities to get all aspects of state-of-art high-tech medical aid, ranging from surgical treatment with the application of photo-dynamic therapies and chemotherapy in the intraoperative mode to radio-surgical techniques and combined X-ray methods with the use of cyber-blade.

The Center also offers extended possibilities of palliative aid which relies not only on conservative and surgical pain relief techniques, but also on the new, presently developing in Russia, methods, such as hyperthermia, HIFU and other technologies.

The Center boasts a high research potential. It has been the home for a great number of brilliant researchers who are involved both in fundamental research and development and in practical application of the advanced approaches to cancer treatment, as well as in the creation of new anti-tumor medications and conservative treatment programs with the purpose to improve patients’ quality of life.

The staff of the Center:

  • 5 Members of the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS), 2 Associate Members of RAS

  • 94 Doctors of Medicine (holders of post-doctoral degree in Medicine)

  • 247 Candidates of Medicine (Ph.D.)

  • 468 Researchers

  • 380 Doctors

CORE AREAS OF WORK:

Radiation therapy

  • The Center has successfully put into practice various technologies of conformal X-ray therapy (3D, IMRT, IGRT) and non-conventional techniques of distant photon therapy, including the combination of the latter with local hyperthermia. The Center's experts have also accumulated a vast experience in application of such a high-tech method of treating malignant neoplasms as intra-operative beam therapy.

Radiotherapeutics

  • The Center uses interstitial radiotherapy techniques, including sealed-source therapy of prostate cancer and oral cavity tumors. The technique of radioiodine therapy is used for patients with thyroid cancer and thyrotoxicosis. In case of bone metastases radionuclide therapy is applied.

Photodynamic therapy

  • Methods of photodynamic therapy have been widely used in the Center due to their low invasiveness, selective tissue destruction and the possibility of repeated use, as well as good cosmetic results and the absence of toxic immunosuppressive reactions.

Diagnostics

  • Accurate diagnosis is the starting point in the treatment a cancer patient. Timely and early diagnosis of cancer is a major key to its successful treatment, so the development of diagnostic methods is one of the top priorities of our work. The Center offers various opportunities for examination required to identify almost any type of cancer.

Oncohematology

  • The Hematology Department provides treatment for patients with Hodgkin's disease and Hodgkin's lymphomas, as well as with non-Hodgkin's lymphomas (lymphosarcomas), multiple myeloma and relapse of these diseases.

Chemotherapy

  • Extensive use of the so-called “smart” drugs has become regular practice in cancer cure. These drugs are channeled directly to cancer cells and are deposited in their membranes, or introduced into biological intracellular processes. Such pharmaceuticals include both biological and chemical agents, as well as antibodies. The main advantage of these medications is that they have the maximum destructive effect on the tumor while causing minimal damage to the healthy cells of the human body.

Surgical treatment

  • The Center's Surgery comprises the following areas: abdominal, thoracic, thoraco-abdominal surgeries, breast and skin reconstructive surgery, microsurgery, oncologic orthopedics, neurosurgery, oncourology, gynecologic oncology, gynecology (including IVF), X-ray surgery, urology, kidney transplantation and dialysis. This allows the Center to quickly provide the necessary multiprofile high tech medical care. The use of modern tools and supplies, including microsurgical, endoscopic, endovascular, laser surgery, etc. ensures the quality of service.
